ECG (EKG) heart screening
A quick, painless ECG can help detect underlying heart conditions that a standard physical may not catch. It’s $40, and available to anyone who wants peace of mind about their heart — not just athletes.
Required for first-time student athletes
Florida now requires a one-time ECG heart screening for first-time high school athletes. The requirement took effect July 1, 2026 and applies to all incoming ninth graders, along with any student in grades 10–12 who has not previously participated in an FHSAA-sanctioned sport. Returning athletes are encouraged, but not required, to complete one.
The screening is recorded on the FHSAA EL1 form, which is separate from the EL2 physical evaluation. First-time athletes need both.
We perform the ECG here in our office. Student athletes can complete the heart screening and the sports physical in a single visit, so there’s no second appointment or outside referral to arrange — and because it’s available on its own, anyone who simply wants reassurance about their heart health can schedule one too.
