Adjacent Level Disc Disease – 4 Postoperative X-Ray Examples

April 6, 2017 by Dr. Scott Smith

With Adjacent Level Disc Disease, we start with your spine. You have 24 bones in your spine. 7 in your neck, 12 in your mid-back and 5 in your lower back.

Each of these bones should move and work in conjunction with one another. Many times you will have a herniated disc, or if you have a spinal surgery you will see a fusion. If it’s in the cervical spine it’s called a Cervical Fusion. If it’s in the lumbar spine it’s called a Lumbar Fusion.

The point here is that whenever you fuse a level, then above and below the fused level will have to work harder and eventually wear-out quicker than normal.
